REMEMBERING 'RINGO

It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I'm a huge fan of Mike Wieringo. That guy, man, he had something special. His designs were always so slick and had an amazing animated edge to them that just brought all his work to life.

He passed 3 years ago from a sudden heart attack. I never did get a chance to meet him in person, but I did talk to him once.

On a random night in July of 2007, I was working at the computer and decided to take a break, so I headed over to Mike's site to see what was new. When I'd refresh the page, the same two banner headers kept rotating, so I thought, "Man, he needs some new banners up there."

So I grabbed some images he had posted and decided to create some new banners for him as a small design exercise. I sent them off, not really expecting anything, but then less than an hour later I get this in my inbox:

Hey, man... I LOVE THESE...!

They're very cool... you really do have a great sense of design. I
tell you what... I'll incorporate them into the que of rotating
banners and also tell folks that you designed them for Monday's post.
Do you have a web site that I could also link to...?

These really do look terrific. I'm honored you'd do this.

There's really nothing left to say. Here is an artist I hold in extremely high esteem and all I did was a few website banners for him and he took the time to write that. He had no idea who I was and yet, he got right back to me and just made my day. How great is that! I thought to myself, "Sweet! When I get some more time, I'll do a few more."

Less than a month later, he was gone. And I never did do any new banners.

But I think about his email to me from time to time and smile. I'll always think about what could have been and wonder what kind of work he'd be producing these days. Something amazing, I'm sure.

So my request to you guys is this; if there's an artist out there or someone who's work you really get into, take some time out and tell that person. Send an email, tweet a tweet, make a blog post or comment. Just let that person know. You may not think it matters, but it does. Share what you enjoy.

So cheers to you Mike Wieringo. You are missed, but the love of your work continues.

So I got to thinking about cool stuff I could do with him pose-wise and got kind of stuck on what to do. I did some searching and started thinking about the Invaders and then thought, "Wait, Cap totally killed Baron Blood that time!" And after that, I was compelled to get it down.

Greetings Mr. Cxxx. Thank you for your interest in my art. Here's what I charge:
• $75 for fully rendered complete figure
• $25 per hour on design work

I'm not going to tell you how to run your business, but if you really want quality work, you're going to have to be able to pay artists upfront for their work.

I do not work on spec. I do not work on promises of future income. I do not work for the possibility of it maybe making money in the future. In all honesty, if that's what I'm going to do, I'll be working on something I own outright.

Again, thank you for your interest in my art, but I can't agree to anything if you can't agree to compensate me. Especially if I'm supposed to "treat it like a second job I'm getting paychecks for". Seriously?

You need to know it really is insulting to artists to tell them you can't pay them and then that if they agree to work for free that they "take it as serious as a paycheck giving job". I mean, really stop and think about that. Does it make sense to you? Where else can you ask for services and say upfront you're not going to pay someone?

So, again, thank your for the interest. I do suggest you re-evaluate your business plan. I hope it all works out for you and I'm sure you will find some people willing to participate, so good luck to you.

Food One leaked some pages for his book coming out on Wednesday. I colored the first half of the book, along with the front cover and inside front and back pages. I also designed the thing.

...whew...

Not to toot the old horn, but the stuff looks amazing and it was a total labor of love. Jim put his all into this book and it shows. It was awesome getting to color these pages. Not to mention you also get the kick-ass, totally French, Anne Masse on colors for the 2nd half of the book!

So head out to the shop on Wednesday and pick up a copy. Help make those late night/early mornings we spent on this a success!

Hey folks. I spent last weekend at Hypericon down in Nashville. I didn't do much, aside from bartend at the Apex room party, which was awesome. People at those cons aren't really looking for mini-comics and whatnot, BUT I did manage to get a few sketch requests.

So for your viewing pleasure, here's what I concocted over Sat. and Sun. I did two sketch cards as well, but didn't get a pic of them. So girl who requested that Spider-Man and the Death, Jr., if you happen to come across this blog, send me some pics of those cards I did for ya. :)

George Carlin, R.I.P.

So I woke up this morning and found out George Carlin is dead. Fuck. He is my favorite stand-up of all time. When I was 8, my parents got HBO and my eyes were opened to a world previously foreign to me; the world of hour-long, un-cut stand-up comedy. All my previous experiences were seeing random comedians do their short 5 minutes on 'The Tonight Show' or a multitude of late-night programs.

Featured on HBO, I remember seeing Robert Klein, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, and greatest of all George Carlin.

To call him an influence would be understating it. His comedy resonated with me, even at a young age and he quickly became the comedian I would seek out. I'd eagerly await his next special. I even remember my parents and I planning for and gathering around to watch both his 'Welcome Home' and 'What Am I Doing in New Jersey?' specials.

Yeah, of all people, George Carlin brought my family together. Heh.

My wife are I were lucky enough to see him in Louisville a few years ago. It's still one of the highlights of my life. I got to see my favorite stand-up do his thing in his natural environment and it was great.

So rest well George Carlin. Thanks for everything and may you wreak havoc in the afterlife.

The time has arrived! If you bought the mini at CAPE or through other means, then you've read this comic already, but you haven't seen it in nasty pastel FULL COLOR....until now!

Also, there are some links and new pages that aren't fully functional yet, but I'll be working throughout the weekend to get those in order. I really wanted the site to be a place to showcase all I do, so there's some new "Design" and "Digital Coloring" links up that have stuff I've done.

It's been a long two weeks kiddies. This past week was spent by staying up late getting the Pop Stew V.1 and Captain Brickbeard mini-comics worked on. And I can now say with full confidence...THEY ARE DONE!!

Mini-comics aren't as easy as one might think. Whew. Shawn (the Capt. BB writer) and I also made a little production video. Enjoy!

I met a cool guy over the weekend, David Flora, who's writer and artist of a book called Ghost Zero. I picked up the first issue and really dug it. It's got that old, pulp-hero feel, which I'm a fan of. If you like Hellboy, The Shadow or anything like that, check it out at: Ghost0Zero.com!

Here's a card and two sketch cards I made of the two people that helped me get better during my 9 weeks of physical therapy, Alex and Jesse. They're the best and they made getting and feeling better fun. I gave them the cards today because it was my last visit for the foreseeable future.
